Human Rights Day (10 December), proclaimed by Resolution 423 (V) of the General Assembly of the United Nations on 4 December 1950, marks the day on which the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, which turns 75 in 2023.
“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, was the result of the experience of the Second World War. With the end of that war, and the creation of the United Nations, the international community vowed to never again allow atrocities like those of that conflict to happen again. World leaders decided to complement the UN Charter with a road map to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere. The document they considered, and which would later become the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was taken up at the first session of the General Assembly in 1946.”

Article 14(1) of the Declaration states that “Everyone subjected to persecution has the right to seek and to enjoy asylum in other countries”. All people who move – voluntarily or forcibly – must have their rights promoted and protected.
In this line, NOVA Asylum Policy Lab would like to remind and reaffirm that Migrants’ Rights are Human Rights!

O Dia dos Direitos Humanos (10 de dezembro), proclamado através da Resolução 423 (V) pela Assembleia Geral da Organização das Nações Unidas, a 4 de dezembro de 1950, celebra o dia em que foi adotada a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos que, em 2023, completa 75 anos.
“A Declaração Universal dos Direitos do Homem, adotada pela Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas em 10 de dezembro de 1948, foi o resultado da experiência da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Com o fim desta guerra e a criação das Nações Unidas, a comunidade internacional comprometeu-se a nunca mais permitir que atrocidades como as desse conflito voltassem a acontecer. Os líderes mundiais decidiram complementar a Carta das Nações Unidas com um roteiro para garantir os direitos de todos os indivíduos em todo o mundo. O documento que consideraram, e que mais tarde se tornaria a Declaração Universal dos Direitos Humanos, foi adotado na primeira sessão da Assembleia Geral em 1946.”

O artigo 14.º, n.º 1, da Declaração consagra que “Toda a pessoa sujeita a perseguição tem o direito de procurar e de beneficiar de asilo em outros países”. Todas as pessoas que se deslocam – voluntária ou forçadamente – devem ter os seus direitos promovidos e protegidos.
Neste sentido, o NOVA Asylum Policy Lab vem relembrar e reafirmar que os Direitos dos/as Migrantes são Direitos Humanos!
