Once upon a time…
In 2017, Francisco Pereira Coutinho and Emellin de Oliveira (Professor and PhD student at NOVA School of Law, respectively) wrote a project that aimed to activate the third mission of the University: community support. After the approval of the Rectorate of the NOVA University of Lisbon in 2019, the NOVA Refugee Clinic was officially created. This project involves all the organic units (OUs) of the NOVA University of Lisbon, being each UO responsible for creating a clinic related to the courses they offer in their academic programme. The first clinic was the Legal Clinic, founded by Francisco Pereira Coutinho and Emellin de Oliveira at NOVA School of Law. The second clinic is called NOVA Asylum Policy Lab, founded at NOVA FCSH by Gabriele de Angelis and Emellin de Oliveira, who initially formed a team with Elizabeth Challinor and Marta Lemos working on refugee integration policies in Portugal. Currently, the NOVA Asylum Policy Lab team has grown and has more researchers from several other sciences, diversifying and deepening the multidisciplinarity of our research. We hope that in the near future other clinics can be created and developed in other UOs by Professors and Researchers who are willing to focus on asylum and refuge in their work and research.

Em 2017, Francisco Pereira Coutinho e Emellin de Oliveira (Professor e Doutoranda na NOVA School of Law, respetivamente) escreveram um projeto que visava ativar a terceira missão da Universidade: o apoio à comunidade. Após a aprovação da Reitoria da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, em 2019, foi criada oficialmente a NOVA Refugee Clinic, que se consubstancia num projeto que envolve todas as unidades orgânicas (UO) da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, cabendo a cada uma das UO’s criar uma clínica relacionada aos cursos que as compõem. A primeira clínica foi a Legal Clinic, fundada por Francisco Pereira Coutinho e Emellin de Oliveira na NOVA School of Law. A segunda clínica chama-se NOVA Asylum Policy Lab, fundada na NOVA FCSH por Gabriele de Angelis e Emellin de Oliveira, que formaram um equipa, inicialmente, com Elizabeth Challinor e Marta Lemos a trabalhar sobre as políticas de integração de refugiados em Portugal. Atualmente, a equipa do NOVA Asylum Policy Lab já cresceu e conta com mais investigadores/as de outras ciência, diversificando e aprofundando a multidisciplinariedade da nossa investigação. Esperamos que num futuro próximo outras clínicas possam ser criadas e desenvolvidas nas outras UOs por Professores/as e Investigadores/as que queiram dirigir o seu trabalho e a sua investigação para o âmbito do asilo e do refúgio.
