No primeiro semestre de 2023, o NOVA Asylum Policy Lab estabeleceu-se como um think tank com o objetivo de reunir investigadores/as e consultores/as para promover as três missões das universidades: ensino, investigação e apoio à comunidade. Desta forma nasceu a nova identificação do laboratório: “NOVA Asylum Policy Lab – Bridging Policies and People”.

Com este propósito em mente, a equipa do Lab buscou as melhores oportunidades para fomentar as suas ações. A primeira delas foi, a bem-sucedida, candidatura ao programa de ensino Módulo Jean Monnet, promovido pela Agência Executiva Europeia de Educação e Cultura (EACEA) e cofinanciado pelo Programa Erasmus+.

O projeto “Jean Monnet Module on EU Asylum Policy: assessing practices of refugees reception” (EUAsPO), coordenado pelo membro fundador do Lab, Gabriele de Angelis, foi um dos selecionados da edição de 2023 do Módulo Jean Monnet na área do Ensino e Investigação do Ensino Superior (ERASMUS-JMO-2023) e tem início previsto para o ano letivo de 2023/2024.

Vale ressaltar que o Módulo Jean Monnet é um programa de ensino (ou curso) de curta duração, voltado para temas da União Europeia e lecionado numa instituição de ensino superior, neste caso, na Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH). Cada Módulo aprovado tem uma duração mínima de 40 horas lectivas por ano, exigindo o contributo académico de vários/as professores/as e peritos/as.

Em seguida, o NOVA Asylum Policy Lab foi um dos 10 selecionados para a edição 2023 do NOVAimpACT! Challenges. Um programa criado pelo gabinete NOVA Impact, em conjunto com o Santander Universidades, para dar a oportunidade de projetos inovadores saírem do papel. Em sua primeira fase, foram 3 semanas de acompanhamento com peritos/as, que apoiaram a equipa do Lab a encontrar a melhor forma de orientar as suas ações com foco em objetivos claros – o impacto social.

Foram dias de muito aprendizado e de evolução do formato de apresentação do NOVA Asylum Policy Lab. Na segunda fase do programa, os 10 selecionados se encontraram no Demo Day dos NOVA ImpACT Challenges 2023, realizado no dia 14 de julho de 2023 na Reitoria da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Na oportunidade todos fizeram um pitch de 3 minutos, no qual puderam apresentar a sua ideia para o júri selecionar um vencedor. O projeto vencedor foi o intitulado “Trash4Goods”, que apresentou uma abordagem inovadora para promover a reciclagem de resíduos electrónicos.

In the first semester of 2023, NOVA Asylum Policy Lab established itself as a think tank aiming at bringing together researchers and consultants to promote the three missions of universities: teaching, research and contribution to society. This is how the lab’s new identity was born: “NOVA Asylum Policy Lab – Bridging Policies and People”.

With this purpose in mind, the Lab team looked for the best opportunities to foster its actions. The first of them was the successful application to the Jean Monnet Module teaching programme, promoted by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme.

The project “Jean Monnet Module on EU Asylum Policy: assessing practices of refugee reception” (EUAsPO), coordinated by Lab founding member Gabriele de Angelis, was one of the selected projects of the 2023 edition of the Jean Monnet Module in Higher Education Teaching and Research (ERASMUS-JMO-2023) and is scheduled to start in the 2023/2024 academic year.

It is worth mentioning that the Jean Monnet Module is a short teaching programme (or course), focused on European Union themes and taught in a higher education institution, in this case, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA FCSH). Each approved Module has a minimum duration of 40 teaching hours per year, requiring the academic input of several professors and experts.

Subsequently, the NOVA Asylum Policy Lab was one of the 10 selected for the 2023 edition of NOVAimpACT! Challenges. A programme created by the NOVA Impact office, together with Santander Universities, to give innovative projects the opportunity to get off the ground. In its first phase, there were 3 weeks of follow-up with experts, who supported the Lab team to find the best way to guide their actions with a focus on clear objectives – social impact.

These were days of much learning and evolution of the NOVA Asylum Policy Lab presentation format. In the second phase of the programme, the 10 selected met at the NOVA ImpACT Challenges 2023 Demo Day, held on 14 July 2023 at the Rectory of NOVA University Lisbon. At the opportunity, everyone made a 3-minute pitch, in which they were able to present their idea for the jury to select a winner. The winning project was entitled “Trash4Goods”, which presented an innovative approach to promote the recycling of electronic waste.
